Una nuova realtà tutta italiana si affaccia nel panorama nostrano: sono i KeeN, giovane quintetto di Sulmona (AQ), fortemente debitore di sonorità vicine a Rammstein e Marilyn Manson, con all'attivo un EP, "Love With Bile", il cui singolo "Nailing Keen" avete avuto occasione di ascoltare sulla compilation di Rock Hard allegata al numero di dicembre. Il frontman Shirley ci racconta com'è nata questa band.

"Il progetto KeeN nacque come idea intorno al 1999, ma “KeeN” era solamente il “marchio” che usavo per le mie musiche prettamente di stampo industrial. Non era un gruppo, anche perché non avevo una band e soprattutto non c’erano persone adatte a suonare quello che io avevo in mente di creare. Poi la casualità ha voluto che nell’agosto del 2002 parlassi di questo progetto, con i miei migliori amici, nonché musicisti e soprattutto senza una band, e loro hanno accolto volentieri questa mia “strana” proposta. Quel progetto, col passare dei mesi, è oggi diventato una vera e propria band! Abbiamo ottenuto tantissimi risultati nel giro di pochissimo tempo e siamo fieri di noi stessi per essere il primo ed unico gruppo della Valle Peligna ad essersi imposto all’attenzione nazionale!! Il bello è che è tutto accaduto nel giro di 6 mesi!!! Alla faccia di chi, alle spalle, ha sempre denigrato la nostra musica, di chi ci ha messo più volte i bastoni tra le ruote e buttato merda addosso e che adesso muore d’invidia."

Dall'artwork e dalle vostre foto emerge chiaramente una certa cura dell'immagine dei Keen. Quant'è importante per voi avere un look accattivante?

"Musica e immagine vanno curate allo stesso modo senza penalizzare niente e senza lasciare nulla al caso. In particolar modo il nostro tipo di sound ci porta a sperimentare anche nel look. L’immagine è importantissima, attraverso essa cerchiamo di esternare le nostre sensazioni ed emozioni, così da avere un maggiore impatto con chi ascolta la nostra musica. Vogliamo colpire sia attraverso le nostre canzoni sia attraverso l’immagine, non vogliamo essere un gruppo musicalmente preparato ma scenicamente anonimo! Attraverso l’immagine si capisce da subito il messaggio che una band vuole lanciare. Noi, a prima vista, possiamo sembrare un gruppo tendenzialmente goth, ma non appena partono i nostri brani lasciamo allibiti chi ci ascolta. Sembriamo tanto dolci nell’immagine, ma è il nostro sound a rivelare la nostra vera indole. In molti dei nostri testi ricade l’argomento “amore”, ma noi non trattiamo certo l’amore fatto di baci, carezze e fiori di campo. Il nostro è un amore marcio! Prendiamo solo la parte peggiore che l’amore possa offrire, anche perchè è proprio la parte che prevale in ogni rapporto."

Avete già avuto qualche contatto con delle etichette? Cosa c'è nel futuro dei Keen?

"Qualcuno di voi ci sa spiegare perché una Valeria Rossi è riuscita ad avere un contratto con 3 parole e noi con 666 non ci siamo ancora riusciti?!?!?!?? Scherziamo (…forse…)!! No, purtroppo le proposte che finora ci sono arrivate non ci hanno allettato, avevano un retrogusto di fregatura. Adesso siamo alla ricerca di una bella etichetta indipendente che creda in noi al 100% e alla quale daremo il 101%. Il nostro futuro?!?! Magari poterlo prevedere. Certo è che stiamo sfornando pezzi su pezzi che andranno a comporre il nostro primo full leght che uscirà per la primavera/estate del 2004 e che registreremo sempre negli ACME Recording Studio (Raiano - AQ)."

A new Italian reality is coming out in the national outline: their name is KeeN, a young quintet of Sulmona (L’Aquila), with sonorities very close to Rammstein and Marilyn Manson. They made an EP, “Love With Bile”, which single, “Nailing Keen”, you had the opportunity to listen as it was included in the compilation released with Hard Rock of December. The front man, Shirley, will tell us about the evolution of this band.

“The KeeN project was initially thought in 1999 but KeeN was only the name I used for the industrial music I made. It was not a band as I didn’t even have a band in that period and most of all I hadn’t found the right people that could play the music I was thinking to create. During summer 2002, by chance, I spoke to my best friends about my project, they are musicians, they didn’t have a band and they granted my “strange” proposal. That project, as time went by, became a real band! We obtained good results in a short time and we are proud of ourselves as we are the only band of the Peligna Valley that has brought themselves to the attention of the nation. The most beautiful thing is that it all happened in a short time, only six months! In spite of those people that have always denigrated our music, put a spoke in our wheel and now envy us!”

From the artwork and from your pictures it stands out the attention to KeeN’s image. How much is important for you to have a attracting look?

“Music and image need to be taken into consideration in the same way without penalizing or forgetting about anything. Most importantly our type of sound encourages us to experiment also in our look. Image is very important, it helps us express our sensations and emotions in order to have a higher impact on who listens to our music. We want to strike both through our songs and our image, we don’t want to be a musically prepared band but scenically anonymous! Through the image it is easy to understand from the beginning the message that a band wants to give. At first sight, we may seem a goth band but as soon as we start playing our songs, who listens to us is dumbfounded. We seem so sweet in our image but it’s our sound that reveals our real nature. In many of our lyrics we mention often the “love” subject but we surely don’t deal with love made by kisses, caresses and flowers. Ours is a rotten love! We only take the worst aspect that love can offer, also because it’s surely the aspect that prevails in all relationships.”

Have you already received any contacts from the labels? What’s in KeeN’s future?

“Does anyone know why Valeria Rossi managed to have a contract only with 3 words and we haven’t yet managed with 666?!?!? Just kidding (…maybe…)!! No, unfortunately the proposals we have received so far haven’t been interesting enough. They had a kind of swindle feeling. At the moment we are looking for a good independent label that believes in us 100% to whom we will give 101%. Our future?!? It would be great to foresee it. The only certain thing is that we are turning out many tracks that will compose our full leght that will be released during spring/summer 2004 and recorded at ACME Recording Studio (Raiano-AQ).
